## Exchange ticker symbol (Ticker)

It narrows the field to a shortlist. No rule in this engine decides a pair on it.

One listing of one security on one venue. Not a company: a multi-listed company returns one entry per listing, a company with two share classes has two symbols, and a delisting removes the identifier without touching the company.

- Decides a match on its own: No
- Issued or derived by us: Never
- Failure modes below: 4
- Identifier systems compared: 8 in total
- When identifiers are compared: Narrows the field

Test it on your own column: A first file carries this column and whatever else your export has. Back comes the rows it settled, the rows it could not, and for those, the column that would have. [Start free →](https://app.entitybind.com/app?signup=1)

Unique within: One exchange. The same symbol is issued independently on venues that have never coordinated, and a company that moves listing takes a new one.

## What your Ticker column does in Entity Bind

Exact ticker-plus-venue agreement is a shortcut to a match, and a ticker that disagrees counts for nothing at all. The agreeing case is the fourth and last rule of the stage that compares identifier values; there is no rule for the disagreeing case, by design. Send it as `ticker` with `exchange`. It is supplied by SEC EDGAR and carried in the crosswalk with one entry per listing, because a company has as many tickers as it has listings.

Your own column will carry gaps and typos the specimen does not, and a few hundred rows will show how much of your file it still settles. [Start free →](https://app.entitybind.com/app?signup=1)

## Issuer, shape and a specimen

Every row below is checkable in another tab: the body that assigns the identifier, the exact shape including any check digits, and a specimen value. Where we hold a value we have verified against the issuing body, the specimen is that value; where we do not, it is a shape, labelled as one.

- Issued by: The listing venue. There is no central assignment and no global uniqueness.
- Unique within: One exchange. The same symbol is issued independently on venues that have never coordinated, and a company that moves listing takes a new one.
- Format: One to five characters on most US venues, longer and differently punctuated elsewhere, with suffixes and class letters applied inconsistently between data providers. A ticker without its venue is not an identifier; a ticker with its venue is one, and only for as long as the listing lasts.
- What one value identifies: One listing of one security on one venue. Not a company: a multi-listed company returns one entry per listing, a company with two share classes has two symbols, and a delisting removes the identifier without touching the company.
- Specimen: Shape only. A ticker printed without the venue that issued it is the error this entry is about, and the venue vocabulary here is not yet normalised — see below.

## What goes wrong with Ticker

The failure modes that decide whether this column is worth sending, and what each one costs you once it turns up in a live file. Worth reading before you plan an integration around the column.

01. Agreement is a shortcut; disagreement proves nothing. Exact ticker-plus-venue agreement is a match shortcut, and it is the fourth and last rule the stage comparing identifier values runs. Disagreement is treated as nothing at all — no conflict, no penalty — because a company can be multi-listed and can change symbols, so two different tickers are a routine property of one company rather than evidence of two. Because only the agreeing direction carries any evidence, the verdict for a ticker is the cautious one: it does not decide a match.
02. The venue arrives as free text. EDGAR gives the exchange as a written name rather than as the short code that names a venue unambiguously — [the ISO 10383 market identifier code](https://www.iso20022.org/market-identifier-codes) — so a ticker is only unambiguous once that text has been normalised, and the MIC register that would do the normalising is a planned source here, not a live one. Until it is wired, ticker-plus-exchange agreement fires on the strings as they arrive.
03. The scorer holds ticker and exchange feature keys in its contract at zero, with no labelled support in the gold set — the pairs a human has judged. The zero is deliberate rather than pending: a weight with no observations behind it would be an assertion, so the key stays in the contract and the number stays at zero until labelled pairs move it.
04. It is a poor primary key and a good corroborating one. A record that arrives with a name, a country and a ticker is materially easier to resolve than the same record without the ticker, and none of that improvement comes from the ticker deciding anything on its own.

Internal fixtures only. The historical 2026-08-29 per-tier recording covers 317 GB companies with identifier-rich arrivals seeding the catalogue first; the context tier includes country and registered-town prose. Its legacy replay has no full-prompt-verified calls and cannot certify current calibration. The September 5 CI reports cover 1,176 labelled pairs and 705 records over 250 companies using offline stubs. These are not independent customer holdouts or live production validation; the 99% minimum-input product target remains unmet. Scope is company and organisation identity only — not people, vessels, bank-account ownership, sanctions or emissions. Results may not be used for eligibility decisions about individuals, including employment, credit and tenancy.

If one of those is already in your file, a sample turns it into a number of rows instead of a suspicion. [Start free →](https://app.entitybind.com/app?signup=1)

## The other identifiers on a company record

4 of the 8 settle a pair on their own; the other 4 narrow the field and hand the decision on. If your file carries more than one of them, the question worth settling is which one is doing the work.

## Where Ticker shows up elsewhere

The rest of the answer, on the shelves that hold it. Each card names its own — a register, a definition, a guide or a comparison — and opens on the page that carries it at length.

- [United States](https://entitybind.com/coverage/united-states) (Jurisdiction): There is no national company register in the United States. Coverage is Colorado, as public-domain bulk data, plus SEC EDGAR. Delaware publishes nothing.
- [Ticker symbol](https://entitybind.com/glossary/ticker) (Definition): A ticker is the short code identifying a security on a particular exchange — a property of a listing rather than of a company, and unambiguous only once the exchange is named.
- [Match weight](https://entitybind.com/glossary/match-weight) (Definition): A match weight is the log-scaled contribution one comparison makes to a pair's score, positive when agreement is evidence of a match and negative when disagreement is evidence against.
- [Crosswalk](https://entitybind.com/glossary/crosswalk) (Definition): A crosswalk is a mapping between the identifier schemes that name the same company in different systems — LEI to company number to CIK to ticker — so that data joined on one key can be joined to data keyed on another.
- [Company identifiers explained](https://entitybind.com/guides/company-identifiers-explained) (Guide): Company number, LEI, CIK, ticker, SIREN and SIRET, DUNS, VAT, EUID and ISIN. What each identifies, who issues it, what it does not guarantee, and which ones actually decide a match.
- [Fellegi-Sunter explained, with worked arithmetic](https://entitybind.com/guides/fellegi-sunter-explained) (Guide): The probabilistic record linkage model behind most matching engines: m and u probabilities, match weights, the three decision regions, and a worked example you can check with a calculator.

## Sources

The bodies and records this page quotes about Ticker, each with the caveat that travels with it.

- [SEC EDGAR company search](https://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch): A register of filers rather than of incorporation, so a company absent from it is not a company that does not exist. United States federal works are public domain.
- [ISO 10383 market identifier codes](https://www.iso20022.org/market-identifier-codes): The code list that would turn EDGAR's free-text exchange names into a stable venue key. It is a planned source here, not a live one.

## Questions about Ticker

### Why is a ticker not enough to identify a company?

Because it identifies a listing rather than a company, and the listing is neither globally unique nor permanent. The same symbol is issued independently on venues that have never coordinated, a multi-listed company carries one symbol per venue, two share classes carry two symbols, and a delisting removes the symbol while leaving the company exactly where it was. Entity Bind uses exact ticker-plus-venue agreement as a shortcut in the stage that compares identifier values, treats disagreement as no evidence at all, and returns one crosswalk entry per listing rather than pretending a company has one ticker.

### Do you normalise exchange names to market identifier codes?

Not yet. EDGAR publishes the exchange as free text, and the ISO 10383 market identifier code register that would turn that text into a stable key is a planned source rather than a live one. The practical consequence: exact ticker-plus-venue agreement is matched on the strings as they arrive, so two records that spell the same venue differently will not fire the shortcut and will fall through to the stages that do not depend on it.
