Company number
The definition as the field writes it comes first, weaknesses and all. What Entity Bind does about it comes last, in its own paragraph, so you can take one without the other. Filed under identifiers.

every figure, with its population →What company number means
A company number is the identifier a register gives a company when it incorporates. Companies House issues eight-character numbers, optionally with a letter prefix that encodes the jurisdiction or company type. Other registers use entirely different shapes. The number is authoritative for the register that assigned it and means nothing outside it.
The most common and most expensive mistake in company data is treating 'company number plus country' as a unique key. It is not: many jurisdictions run more than one register, German numbers are qualified by the court that holds them, and several countries operate parallel number spaces for tax, statistics and incorporation. A record whose number is stored without its issuing authority has lost information that cannot be recovered by inspection, because the shapes overlap.
The second common mistake is normalising the number as if it were an integer. Stripping leading zeros or a letter prefix creates collisions with other schemes, and a six-digit remainder can look like a completely different kind of reference.
Entity Bind stores registration numbers scoped to their issuing authority, checks register shape rather than string equality, and treats conflicting authority-scoped numbers as a decisive non-match rather than as a weak negative signal. Name uniqueness in the register is measured before any claim is made about name matching: on Companies House's 5,464,811 live companies, 99.53% of names are unique.

LEI (Legal Entity Identifier)
The LEI is a 20-character ISO 17442 code identifying a legal entity that participates in financial transactions, issued through the Global LEI Foundation and published as open reference data.
Crosswalk
A crosswalk is a mapping between the identifier schemes that name the same company in different systems — LEI to company number to CIK to ticker — so that data joined on one key can be joined to data keyed on another.
Deterministic matching
Deterministic matching decides a pair by an explicit rule — usually agreement on a strong identifier — and produces the same verdict every time with no score in between.
Reference data
Reference data is the slow-changing, externally defined data used to classify and identify things — registers, code lists, identifier schemes — as opposed to the transactional data that refers to it.
SIREN and SIRET
SIREN is the nine-digit identifier France assigns to a legal unit and SIRET is the fourteen-digit identifier of one of its establishments — the same company at two different levels of granularity.
Normalisation
Normalisation rewrites a record into a comparable form — case, punctuation, legal forms, identifier shapes — before any comparison is attempted, and it is where most of the achievable accuracy in entity resolution is won or lost.

The historical 2026-08-29 per-tier recording covers 317 GB companies with identifier-rich arrivals seeding the catalogue first; the context tier includes country and registered-town prose. Its legacy replay has no full-prompt-verified calls and cannot certify current calibration. The September 5 CI reports cover 1,176 labelled pairs and 705 records over 250 companies using offline stubs. These are not independent customer holdouts or live production validation; the 99% minimum-input product target remains unmet. Scope is company and organisation identity only — not people, vessels, bank-account ownership, sanctions or emissions.
